High-Impact Learning Experiences
High-impact opportunities in food science and technology abound in today’s dynamic global landscape. From innovative product development to sustainable sourcing, the field offers a wide array of avenues for professionals to make a significant difference. For instance, leveraging cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and biotechnology in food processing can revolutionize production efficiency and quality control. Additionally, addressing food security challenges through advancements in preservation techniques and distribution systems is crucial for ensuring adequate nutrition for a growing global population. The pursuit of clean and alternative protein sources, as well as the development of personalized nutrition solutions, further underscore the transformative potential of this field. Moreover, sustainable packaging materials and waste reduction strategies present compelling opportunities for those committed to environmental stewardship. With a strategic focus on these areas, professionals in food science and technology have the capacity to shape a more sustainable, nutritious, and equitable future for all.

University Research Opportunities
The University also offers opportunities for undergraduate research through the LAUNCH and Aggie Research Scholars Program for Undergraduates programs.
LAUNCH
LAUNCH is a unit of Undergraduate Studies in the Division of Academic Affairs. LAUNCH provides high-impact educational experiences and challenges students in all academic disciplines to graduate from an enriched, demanding curriculum. The programs administered by the office bring together outstanding students and faculty to build a community of knowledge-producers, life-long learners, nationally-recognized scholars, and world citizens. Through LAUNCH, motivated students have access to Honors courses, co-curricular enrichment activities, scholarly engagement, and/or research programs that can be customized to enhance each student’s personal, professional, and intellectual development.
Aggie Research Scholars Program for Undergraduates (ARP)
Aggie Research Scholars Program for Undergraduates (ARP) enables undergraduate students to participate in authentic research. ARP is one of the highest-impact experiences undergraduate students can obtain and is increasingly recognized by employers and admissions committees as a valuable indicator of future success. Unlike the traditional 1-on-1 research apprenticeship, Aggie Research Scholars perform research in teams led by an experienced graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. Team Leaders benefit from recruiting diverse members with complementary talents, skills, backgrounds, and interests. Because authentic research projects can last years, underclassmen are usually recruited to replace graduating seniors.
Education Abroad Programs
The study abroad program at our university has been a transformative experience, providing students with unparalleled opportunities for personal and academic growth. Before the challenges posed by the global pandemic, our students eagerly participated in enriching study abroad programs in vibrant locations like Brazil and Italy. These experiences not only expanded their cultural horizons but also allowed them to immerse themselves in diverse learning environments. As we navigate towards a post-Covid era, we are excited about the prospect of reigniting these valuable study abroad initiatives. The resumption of international programs promises to offer our students the chance to once again embrace the world, fostering cross-cultural understanding and enhancing their academic journey with a global perspective.
Industry Internships
Global and national companies recruit students from our department for summer internships and co-ops, with 40% of our undergraduate students completing internships prior to graduation. Just a few of the companies where our students have completed internships are PepsiCo, Kellanova, Ardent Mills, Kraft Heinz, H-E-B, Keurig Dr. Pepper, Tyson Foods, C.H Guenther and Sons, Fairlife, Ingredion, and Cargill.
Product Development Competitions
Students within the Texas A&M Department of Food Science and Technology actively engage in Product Development Competitions sponsored by the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA), industry trade groups, and non-profit organizations. Participation in this high-impact experience is open to all students regardless of student classification and experience level. During the competitions, students work in teams and apply their scientific, technological, marketing, and creative skills to solve real-world challenges related to malnutrition, food insecurity, food waste, and sustainability. Teams develop a new food idea and carry the concept through marketing and production, much like product development teams in the professional industry. Participation in the competitions helps students develop and strengthen teamwork, critical thinking, organizational, and scientific skills necessary for success in graduate school, professional school, and future careers.
Food Science Club
The Food Science Club at Texas A&M University is open to all undergraduate or graduate students who are interested in a career in any aspect of the food industry. The club offers activities that will encourage networking, leadership, and educate members on the principles of food science. Meetings are held weekly with local and out of state food companies about potential careers and what it’s like to work in the field.
IFT Student Association
Since 1939, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) has been a forum for passionate science of food professionals and technologists to collaborate, learn, and contribute all with the goal of inspiring and transforming collective scientific knowledge into innovative solutions for the benefit of all people around the world. As a scientific community grounded in purpose, IFT feeds the minds that feed the world. Learn more about Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Events.
